Life is full of surprises, isn’t it? No matter how much planning I do, something unexpected always seems to pop up! Last Sunday was no exception.
I arrived at church with my mental checklist ready, only to find the Advent wreath candles leaning. A quick search through totes of supplies and a little “candle magic” later, thanks to Michelle Neas, they were standing tall and beautiful.
Then I realized I didn’t have my microphone, and our AV tech hadn’t arrived. It was time to start the service, so I surrendered to the idea of no online broadcast. But just as we began singing, I spotted Kim Cowperthwaite in the second row. Without hesitation, she jumped into the booth, and minutes later gave me a thumbs-up — we were live!
So there you have it, a glimpse into the half hour before service. It’s always an adventure, and I’m so grateful for the amazing people who make it all work.
And isn’t that what Advent reminds us of? The journey to Bethlehem was full of uncertainty and surprises, yet peace was born in the midst of it all. Sunday, as we lit the candle of Peace, we remembered that true peace isn’t the absence of chaos; it’s the calm we carry within, even when plans go sideways.
The Advent Theme: The Journey Home — Returning to Love
Advent invites us on an inner pilgrimage from fear to love. Fear whispers that we’re separate and powerless, but love reminds us we are connected, supported, and whole. Every time we choose love over fear, we take a step closer to peace.
Peace isn’t passive; it’s a spiritual practice of surrender and trust. It’s letting go of control and opening to divine order, just as Mary and Joseph did on their uncertain journey to Bethlehem. When we surrender, peace is born within us.
Today’s talk explores three simple steps to live this truth:
- Pause and Breathe – “Peace in me, peace through me.”
- Surrender and Trust – Release control, affirm divine order.
- Choose Love – Ask: What would love do here?
Peace is not something we earn; it’s something we allow. It’s already here, waiting for us to return to love.
