Heart Thoughts: The Heart Knows

Beneath the Noise, the Heart Knows

This past Sunday, we were gifted with a simple and deeply moving story.

Betty Kay Lewis, a familiar and beloved presence in our community, shared about her weekly visits with an Elder through Maine Sunshine Companions. With her characteristic warmth, she spoke not of something extraordinary, but of something beautifully human: showing up, sitting together, listening, sharing a moment of connection.

And yet… in that simplicity, something sacred is happening.

Lives are being brightened. Loneliness is softened. Dignity is honored not through grand gestures, but through consistent, caring presence.

As I listened, I found myself reflecting on how often love moves this way… quietly, gently, person to person.

If something in you feels stirred even a small curiosity, I invite you to learn more about Maine Sunshine Companions. Sometimes the simplest “yes” becomes someone else’s sunshine.

Moments like these bring us naturally into the heart of Sunday’s message: Discernment in the Noise.

We live surrounded by voices expectations, opinions, headlines, even our own internal chatter all competing for our attention. Yet beneath that noise is deeper wisdom, a steady inner knowing that gently guides us toward what ours is to do.

Discernment is not about thinking harder. It is about listening more deeply.

Betty Kay’s “yes” is a beautiful example of that quiet inner guidance made visible. Not loud. Not forceful. Simply true.

So, this week, I invite you into a practice of listening:

Pause once each day and ask yourself: Is this something I need to carry?” “Is this mine?” “Is this aligned with truth?”

Then listen… not for urgency, but for the voice that feels calm, clear, and grounded in love.

Because often, what we discover in that quiet is not just guidance but feeling.

And that is where we will continue our journey together this Sunday in Week 3: The Courage to Feel.

In changing times, emotions like grief, fear, and uncertainty naturally arise. Rather than pushing them aside or trying to rise above them, we are invited into a deeper, braver path — meeting them with compassion, honoring them without becoming them, and allowing love to move through us like healing water.

Real awakening includes the heart.

I look forward to being together as we explore how tenderness becomes strength, and how feeling fully becomes a doorway to living more fully.

I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to Ira and Julia Levin for their beautiful presence and music Sunday. If you haven’t watched the service, you can see it here.

You are a blessing in my life,
Rev. Patricia Bessey
