What is the Beloved Community?
I define it as a collection of individuals who are learning how to love themselves, one another, and the universe.
This past week, we bid farewell to two cherished members of our beloved community who have earned their wings and found peace. On Thursday, Joan Lowell embarked on her journey home, followed by Betty Gates on Saturday.
As part of our ongoing series, “Starting 2025 with Purpose and Unity,” I want to delve into the key points that encapsulate the essence of a Beloved Community:
The Importance of Community in Personal Growth
Being part of a community nurtures our personal development. It provides us with a support system, encourages us to strive for our best, and reminds us that we are never alone in our journey.
Building and Maintaining Supportive Relationships
True community stems from genuine relationships. Invest time in building connections based on trust, respect, and understanding. These relationships become the backbone of our communal strength.
Active Listening
To truly understand and support one another, we must practice active listening. This means being fully present in our conversations, hearing beyond words, and valuing the perspectives of others.
Offering Help and Support
A Beloved Community thrives on the principle of helping one another. Whether it’s offering a helping hand, providing emotional support, or sharing resources, our acts of kindness reinforce our bonds.
Celebrating Achievements
Every milestone, big or small, deserves recognition. Celebrating achievements together not only boosts morale but also solidifies our sense of unity and shared purpose.
Being Vulnerable
True connection happens when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable. Sharing our fears, failures, and dreams fosters deeper bonds and creates an environment of authenticity and trust.
I invite you to reflect on the importance of community in your own life. Consider the ways in which you can contribute to building and nurturing supportive relationships within our community and beyond.
I want to leave you with this: Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus, our wayshower and teacher, created a Beloved Community by embodying and teaching principles of love, compassion, and inclusiveness. He reached out to the marginalized and oppressed, offering them dignity and a place in his community.
Through teachings like the Sermon on the Mount and actions like healing the sick and feeding the hungry, Jesus demonstrated unconditional love and the importance of serving others. He encouraged his followers to love their neighbors as themselves, forgive others, and put others’ needs before their own, fostering unity and mutual support.
By gathering diverse individuals and showing them, a new way of living based on love, service, and compassion, Jesus laid the foundation for a community that transcended social and cultural boundaries — a true Beloved Community.
Let’s embrace these principles as we journey together in 2025, building a Beloved Community that reflects love, unity, and purpose. If you missed the service you can watch it here.
This coming Sunday, join me for the next topic in the series “Cultivating Inner Peace.”
I’m deeply grateful for each of you taking the time to read this. You truly are special!
You are a blessing in my life,
Rev. Patricia Bessey
