The Light of Life: The Power of Animation, Vitality, and Presence

Sunday Message by Rev. Pat Bessey

Happy Halloween! Thank goodness for Halloween – all of a sudden, cobwebs in my house are decorations! This is a kind of a joke, but can you relate?

boy with clockThis Saturday is the end of daylight savings time. Remember to turn your clocks back before going to bed Saturday night.

This past Sunday we concluded the series using the book Divine Audacity. The talk title was “The Light of Life: The Power of Animation, Vitality and Presence.”

Life, as one of Unity’s Twelve Powers, is not to be confused with human life, as it is a principle and a spiritual ability. As a spiritual principle it has no limits or finite existence.

Animation is the forward, onward, and upward impulse of life. It is consciousness and intention that directs the life force. A+L+E: where your attention is… your love is… that’s where your energy is. So, when our attention – our consciousness – is focused on love, wisdom, faith, prayer, meditation, then our life out pictures these qualities. Animating power of life doesn’t happen to us. We wield the power.

Vitality is our ability to have energy and to thrive. Wholeness is our true nature – which means nothing is missing. We are complete; we didn’t show up as a jigsaw puzzle missing a few pieces. No matter what the physical condition, we are whole, well, and complete. We use spiritual eyes to detect vitality, especially when someone appears to be less than whole.

Life energy manifests first as ANIMATION, secondly as VITALITY, and third as PRESENCE. When we are expressing ANIMATION, VITALITY, and PRESENCE, it lifts up those around us. The stronger we become in this expression, the more we become conquerors of our life experience.

Light of Release: The Power of Cleansing, Renunciation, and Repentance

Sunday Message by Rev. Pat Bessey

This past Sunday a newcomer was at the 8 a.m. service and after the service was over he and his friend came and sat with Rev. LeRoy and me and had a cup of coffee. He asked me a question which he said he asks often of people and it was, “Can you remember a significant time when you saw synchronicity in your life?” My response at the time was, “I can’t think of a specific incident, but I see many if I stay awake.”

Then as I began to write this article I had an aha moment that is related to his question. Here it is: Last week in Heart Thought we said goodbye to Maria Lundy, grateful for her service in the kitchen. We had a plan to keep lunch going and asked many of you for your support during lunch that day. Later that afternoon I got a text from Ingrid Avery, asking if she heard correctly that Maria was leaving the kitchen. I told her that yes, she had heard correctly. She then let me know that she was ready to return to the kitchen and pick up where Maria left off. I just love how synchronicity works. Welcome back, Ingrid! Divine timing is always perfect. By the way – the soup Steph made on Sunday was scrumptious. We are a remarkable team!!

The eleventh power of the Twelve Powers is Release, and my talk was The Light of Release: The Power of Cleansing, Renunciation, and Repentance. From co-founder Charles Fillmore in his book The Twelve Powers of Man: There must be renunciation or letting go of old thoughts before the new can find place in the consciousness. This is a psychological law, which has its outer expression in the intricate eliminative functions of the body.

The first way we practice release is through cleansing. The cleansing action of release is meant to be gentle, allowing rather than forcing. It is meant to clear the body and mind, restoring equanimity.

The cleansing action of release restores our awareness of our original and true divine nature (pg. 178).

The second way is renunciation. Releasing human consciousness is releasing our sense of limitation. We release our belief that “I am only human,” and we uncover our Divine Identity that has been intact all along. Spiritual release is crossing out in consciousness our human sense of self so that our true Divine Identity shows itself.

Spiritually, renunciation takes place when we cultivate an open mind and open heart, giving up every thought and belief we have clung to, becoming teachable through the activity of spiritual understanding (pg. 181).

The third way is repentance. The Greek word for repentance is metanoia: “change in mind or consciousness.” The English translation means to return, restore, come back or turn back. Rev. Linda in the book Divine Audacity says that repentance and forgiveness work together. Think on this: When we understand that to repent is to change our mind, to return to our awareness of our true nature, what is there to forgive? Returning to our Divine Identity or Infinite Self, we have restored our awareness of oneness.

Eckhart Tolle reminds us: Sometimes letting things go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on.

Affirmation: I claim release now. I let go of anything that no longer serves me, so I can let my Infinite Self shine!

Next week will be The Light of Life: The Power of Animation, Vitality, and Presence.

You are a blessing in my life.

Divine Audacity: Shades of Light, Our Spiritual Powers

Sunday Message by Rev. Pat Bessey

There isn’t anything better than summer in Maine. We are having a wonderful streak of great weather and it is what we who live here hold in our minds during the long winter months. Sunday services and fellowship offer an important opportunity to be spiritually fed amongst the busyness of summer. Throughout the summer, we continue to have outstanding speakers, talented musicians, and vibrant fellowship after service in Unity Hall. What a community. We are grateful for your presence and for your consistent giving: We are supported through your generous tithes and offerings. Thank you!

The talk this past Sunday was titled “Shades of Light…Our Spiritual Powers.” I am continuing with the book Divine Audacity written by Rev. Linda Martella-Whitsett. I believe we are all on a spiritual journey and our souls are evolving us from our personal finite selves toward our divine infinite selves, what I like to think of as the big SELF. It is the SELF we came into this world as and then we lost our connection.

Divine Audacity takes the work of Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore and his teaching of the Twelve Powers and gives us a way to implement them in our lives so that we can fulfill our mission of being the light in the world for others to follow. I like what Rev. Linda says about this work… My approach in the following chapters is not to repeat or report on the classic Unity teachings about the Twelve Powers, for I cannot improve upon them. Instead, my desire is to profile each power, describe some of its aspects, illustrate ways it can be expressed, and suggest practices to develop it as a useful spiritual power in daily living.

Although we haven’t yet gotten into each of the powers, we did look at Love and here is what Mr. Fillmore says in another of his books, Jesus Christ Heals: God does not love anybody or anything. (that’s a show stopper – Take a breath and continue)

God does not love anybody or anything.
God IS the love in everybody and everything.
God is love;
Man becomes loving by permitting (that which God is) to find expression in word and act.

Imagine this for a moment: Love emanating POWERFULLY from all of us. Collectively we could heal the world.

The good news is that these powers are already hard-wired into us. I used the analogy on Sunday of the apps on our phones. We have a slew of them, but they are of no value to us unless we learn how to operate them and then utilize them.

Over the next several weeks you will learn how to put into operation these Twelve Powers of Love, Imagination, Power, Judgment, Understanding, Zeal, Elimination, Faith, Life, Order, Wisdom and Strength.

This week as an expression of Love choose acts of kindness and service to connect with others.

And again, from Charles Fillmore and his book, Christian Healing:

Spiritual transformation of our love ability, broadens, strengthens, and deepens it. We no longer confine love to family, friends, and personal relations, but expand it to include ALL things.

An affirmation for you this week: I am a being of Love. I transform my life in ways that are positive, principled, and practical.

You are a blessing in my life.
